Watch VS Warning

2/15/2022 (Permalink)

Knowing the difference when it matters most!

When a storm rolls into town, the first thing on your mind is how close it is to your home and loved ones. Moments like these remind us how important it is to know the difference between a storm watch and a storm warning.

As stated by Weather Works, the difference between the two is as follows:

  • A WATCH means that current weather conditions could potentially develop into severe thunderstorms or tornadoes and it's important to stay updated on the current weather situation as well as be prepared to seek shelter if necessary.
  • A WARNING means that severe weather is imminent in your area or is already occurring and immediate action should be taken to protect yourselves and your loved ones.

Don't wait until a storm arrives to make sure you are prepared! Be sure to develop a plan of action for your family and have a safety kit ready before the storm hits. This will ensure your loved ones are safe and prepared for anything that comes their way.

Storm damage occurs whether we like it or not. When it does, call the experts here at SERVPRO® of Pike, Floyd, and Knott Counties to handle all of your problems year-round!

Utilizing Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

2/9/2022 (Permalink)

Why it's important

When major events like the COVID-19 pandemic strike, everyone begins to see the importance of those workers that are fighting on the front lines to keep us all safe. While they are doing so much to ensure the safety of others, what precautions are being taken to ensure their safety? The answer is simple: PPE.

Personal protective equipment (PPE) is used most notably to ensure the safety of our technicians and customers as well as ensuring proper sanitation of the current property. Our staff is thoroughly trained in the correct knowledge and use of PPE. This is a top priority for us here at SERVPRO® because, without our trained technicians, we can't complete these tough jobs for our customers.

The use of PPE allows our workers to focus and feel safe on the job, rather than worrying about the possible exposure to toxins or other biologic material. If our staff knows they are safe, they can provide the best possible service to each of our customers. We at SERVPRO® of Pike, Floyd, and Knott Counties value the safety of our employees and others when we're on the job. So next time you wonder why all of that equipment is necessary, remember that we couldn't do our jobs safely and effectively without it!

Testing Your Property for Mold

2/8/2022 (Permalink)

What is it?

Mold testing is an excellent way to ensure the health of those you care about, in both your home and business. If you suspect or discover mold on your property, the next step is to call the professionals here at SERVPRO® of Pike, Floyd, and Knott Counties. Our facility is licensed to properly inspect your home for mold growth by utilizing a specially-developed protocol.

Our technicians first perform a visual inspection including photo documentation of any and all mold growth. If necessary, surface and air samples are taken from every room in addition to a laboratory report explaining the findings.

What comes next?

After receiving the results, one of our inspectors sits down with the customer to explain them along with all steps we took during the inspection. We also provide an estimate including the steps we take to remove and treat the mold with their associated costs.

We strive to provide our customers with the best solution possible for any task you throw our way! If you need your home or business tested for mold, call our office today at (606) 886-3826.

Rain, Rain, Go Away! Please Don't Damage My Home Today

2/7/2022 (Permalink)

Ensure your home is ready for heavy rains

Rainstorms can happen any time of the year, but as spring approaches, so do those beloved spring showers, and let's face it: some of those are a little more than just showers!

When heavy rains begin to hit, there are a few simple steps you can take to help you handle these home emergencies before it's too late:

  • Check the position, landscaping, and slope of your home: how your home is positioned can heavily impact flood damages. Contact a professional landscaper for help with this task.
  • Double-check the insulation in your basement: excess rainfall in a short period can overload your basement's waterproofing systems. If this happens, the earth around your basement can become saturated and push water in through foundation cracks. Make sure to have an expert properly inspect your basement to ensure it is storm-ready!
  • Contact your insurance provider to double-check your flood insurance: even the most perfectly protected basements can flood, so make sure you call your insurance provider prior to any emergency event to double-check your flood insurance

Don't let flooding and storm damage get you down! Call SERVPRO® of Pike, Floyd, and Knott Counties today.

Handling Fire Damage in Your Home

2/7/2022 (Permalink)

Fires can be devastating, especially in your home. If you or your loved ones ever experience fire or smoke damage, here are a few helpful DO's and DON'Ts to handle your situation with ease!

What To Do Post-Fire

  • Change HVAC filters.
  • Place clean cloths/towels on any carpet, rugs, or upholstery in trafficked areas.
  • Limit movement within the home to prevent excess soot particles from becoming embedded in carpets or upholstery.
  • Keep hands clean and/or gloved to ensure no further damage to upholstery, walls, and woodwork.
  • Wash both sides of leaves on all affected houseplants.
  • If you experience loss of electricity, be sure to empty the freezer and refrigerator and prop the doors open.

What NOT To Do Post-Fire

  • Don't send any clothing or other garments to an ordinary dry cleaner. Improper cleaning could set the smoke odor in permanently.
  • Don't try to wash any walls or painted surfaces of your home.
  • Don't try to shampoo the carpet or upholstery of your home.
  • Don't try to clean any electrical appliances in your home that may have been close to fire, heat, or water.
  • Don't turn on ceiling fixtures if the ceiling is wet for any reason. The wiring within your home may be damaged.

When you're dealing with fire or smoke damage in your home, call the professionals here at SERVPRO® of Pike, Floyd, and Knott Counties today at (606) 886-3826.

Ready for Stormy Weather?

2/3/2022 (Permalink)

Recently in our area, we've been experiencing a lot of rain and snow fall which majorly increases the chances of flooding. Many local homes and businesses were totally flooded and needed to be evacuated until the water had crested, but at that point the damage had been done.

  • How will I receive emergency alerts and warnings about my area?

Commercial Mold Growth

1/18/2022 (Permalink)

Don't let commercial damages get you down!

Damage to your commercial property can often times be more severe than residential due to the large scale of these facilities, but there's no need to stress: SERVPRO® of Pike, Floyd, and Knott Counties is here to make your damage look "Like it never even happened."

The professionals here at SERVPRO® know there are several places you could find mold lurking in your facility. Here are some common places to be on the lookout for mold growth within your commercial business:

  • Bathrooms: Mold often begins growing in these spaces due to the water and condensation almost always present in bathrooms, more specifically in places like between grout of tiles in the shower and/or bathroom walls.
  • Exterior doors: By sealing an exterior door of your facility improperly, you are allowing any-and-all moisture from the outside to make its way in. This allows mold to collect and grow easily.
  • Windows: Just like exterior doors, if a window is sealed improperly moisture from outside travels through and is exactly what mold needs to thrive. In addition, these improperly sealed windows could serve as a breeding ground for mold spores which are not something you want in your commercial business.

Don't let mold damage go unnoticed! If you suspect mold damage in any of your commercial facilities, give us a call at our office today at (606) 886-3826. We have all the necessary tools to inspect and resolve your possible mold damages!

Pro-Tip: Clean Your Dryer Vents!

1/15/2022 (Permalink)

When you imagine the possibility of a fire starting in your home, you probably think of a kitchen fire, electrical fire, or cigarette fire, which are all very common. What you probably don't think of is the unexpected place in your home that actually causes over 34% of home fires every year: your dryer vents.

Although it may seem like something small, the damage a dryer vent fire can cause is nothing to be underestimated. Failure to clean drying vents is causing an increase in fire damage within homes every single year.

We turn the dryer on before bed, when leaving home, or even when leaving on vacation without thinking twice about the damage it could cause -- until the damage is done. If dryer vents are not properly cleaned before every use, built-up particles could ignite and start a dryer fire in your home.

Keep your home clean and damage-free by taking the time to clean out your dryer vent. It's always better to be safe than sorry! If you do experience fire damage, we've got your back here at SERVPRO® of Pike, Floyd, and Knott Counties.

Flood Insurance for your Home

1/10/2022 (Permalink)

Do you have flood insurance on your old, Kentucky home?

A majority of the home-owners in our area do not have flood coverage and it's time for that to change! Flooding can happen any time of the year, so it's important to be proactive when it comes to protecting your property.

When it floods, water damage is able to infiltrate any and every part of your home/business. That's why it's important to act fast and know your options! Different insurance companies offer different choices to help protect your home in a timely manner.

To get an idea of what's best for you, try sitting down with your insurance agent and discussing your flood coverage options. If floodwaters do infiltrate your your home, there's a risk that it will not be covered due to the additional coverage necessary for insurance companies to payout. This is why it's important to talk to your agent about any additional policies offered for an additional cost.

Don't wait until it's too late! Take the time to learn more about your local insurance coverage. Save yourself or your business money in-the-long-run by contacting your insurance agent today about flood coverage for damage throughout the year.

If there's one thing we know about storms, it's that they can appear and cause damage in any season, even if it's not the typical storm season. Since a storm could happen at any time, there's only one way to ensure the safety of your family and home: PREPAREDNESS!

Not only will ensuring your home is storm-ready keep you and your loved ones safe, but it's the easiest and best way to keep you from spending loads of money on repairs after-the-fact! Preventing future damage starts by fixing any existing damage within the home, especially within the roof.

Damage to your home's roof can be caused by many factors like winter, hail, lightning, animals, etc. If you're not sure about the state of your roof, look for these common indicators that let you know it may be time for some repairs:

  1. Roof is missing shingles.
  2. Areas of the roof are sagging/bending.
  3. Animal footprints/signs of animal are on the roof.
  4. Holes/gaps in roofing that may have been caused by TV satellites or other equipment are present.

Tending to your roof before a storm occurs increases the likelihood that it will be able to withstand a storm. Taking these precautions may not prevent all storm damage from happening but it will minimize its severity as well as decrease your home's chances of suffering from storm damage in the future.

The Importance of Fire Alarms

11/29/2021 (Permalink)

It's that special time of year again when we find families coming together to light the Menorah or hang stockings by the fireplace with glee! As you're spending this time with your loved ones, the last thing you're thinking about is a possible fire hazard until it's too late.

The possibility of a fire is always there and it's better to be safe than sorry! The best way to stay prepared is to have a fire/smoke alarm in your home. Keeping an updated and working fire alarm is crucial when it comes to keeping you and your loved ones safe.

From 2009 to 2013 alone, smoke alarms sounded in over half (53%) of home fires that were reported to U.S. fire departments. The death rate per 100 reported home fires was over twice as high in homes with no functioning fire alarm versus in homes with functioning fire alarms (information obtained from the American Red Cross and local fire departments).

Don't let a fire ruin your holiday! Stay safe this season by adding a smoke alarm to your home or simply by updating and testing your current one to ensure it's functioning properly. Keeping your family safe is the #1 priority and fire alarms help do that!

If you're one of the unlucky few that does experience a house fire, have no fear! Our service professionals here at SERVPRO® of Pike, Floyd, and Knott Counties are ready to help you restore your home to its former glory. Give us a call at our office today for more information!

Power Outage during Storms

8/21/2019 (Permalink)

Have you suffered a power outage?

Outages in your home can be caused by a storm, floods, or even fires. The storms are headed this way as summer turns to fall. Keep your family safe during these changing seasons. It’s always better to be safe than sorry. Keep your family safe by following these tips from our friends at the American Red Cross:

Staying Safe Indoors

  • Use flash lights in the dark, not candles.
  • Eliminate unnecessary travel, especially by car. Traffic lights will be out and roads will be congested.
  • If you are using a generator be sure you understand the risks of carbon monoxide poisoning and how to use generators safely.
  • If you know a storm is coming have shoes close by so you are not stepping on anything that could harm you (i.e. glass, debris, other items that could have caused storm damage in your home)
  • Battery operated devices: to keep you up to date on outages and storm warnings.

Keep these tips on the top of your mind so you and your family are safe during the next power outage.

Best Way to Clean Up Water Damage

5/6/2019 (Permalink)

When you wake up and realize a pipe has burst in the basement or you come home from a long weekend to see the sink was left on in the bathroom and you are left with an overflowing tub --what should you do?

The endgame is to call a professional. But, the best way to clean up a water damage is to stop it before it even starts.

Water damage is tricky. Water damage begins to turn into mold damage within 48 hours. When mold damage is present the cost can double.

The best way to clean up a water damage is to find out how it can happen before it even begins in your home or business.

When you are about to leave home for a long weekend, double check every faucet and spigot inside and around your home. It also does not hurt to have someone come check on your home while you are away.

During winter months make sure to drip water faucets so that the water does not freeze and then expand as soon as the pipes unthaw which causes them to burst.

Be aware when leaving your home or when the weather changes. These are the best ways to clean up water damage --stop it before it even starts!

Commercial Facility Preparedness

5/6/2019 (Permalink)

We help Commercial Property owners create mobile profiles of their emergency information for their buildings for easy access in the event of an emergency. This process can help reduce damage and get us on the scene faster for the disaster.

This free scope of your buildling includes us coming to your facility and taking about 30 minutes to walk through your facility and helping to locate and document with pictures and location notes where all your emergency shut offs are located.  We take the information that you provide us in regards to emergency key contacts name, phone numbers and/or emails that you provide. Along with emergency responder information, so that you know local police station or firefighter information.

We then compile everything you have provided with a secure log in. You can then access the information from any mobile device or a computer.  We can add any additional information that you see that you would like to add.

Another plus side to this type of emergency readiness profile --is that it can also assist in letting us know where to park in case of an emergency and where to put a dumpster if an emergency happens.

Call us today to set up an Emergency Ready Profile!

Watch Vs. Warning

4/30/2019 (Permalink)

Spring weather is in full force which means that so are summer storms. When watching for storms always make sure to know the difference between a watch and a warning.

A WATCH is when a tornado threat could occur. The weather is indicting that a tornado may touch down, but no one has reported or seen an actual funnel cloud. This just means, it could be likely.

On the other hand, a WARNING means that a tornado has been spotted, and the weather is something to take seriously. You should shelter in place, if you haven't already, when the tornado warning appears on the news or local radio stations.

Keep up-to-date with emergency preparedness kits and local news channels to make sure you are prepared when severe weather takes place in your area.

Wind Damage

4/29/2019 (Permalink)

Damage Causing Winds

Many think that rain and flood waters are the primary cause of storm damage, but wind actually factors into more storm damage than you think. We have seen more storm damage from winds than flood waters in recent years.

High winds or damaging winds are often called "straight-line" winds. These winds can exceed anywhere from 50-60 miles per hour, causing dangerous situations for homeowners.

Check Your Insurance

It is always good to double check your insurance for wind damage. When storm damage hits there can be a variety of problems that occur with some covered by insurance and some not, and it's always best to have your home under the best protection.

We service many homes after storm damage, so give us a call!

Insurance Coverage During Storm Season

4/29/2019 (Permalink)

The spring/summer season is upon us which means that so are summer storms.

Are you prepared?

When summer storms occur, things can go one of two ways. You can be covered under your insurance policy and get everything back to "Like it never even happened" Or...

You will not have insurance that covers storm damage and your home could be left in pieces for years to come.

It is that time of the year to check your insurance policy with your local agent. Call them, or schedule a meeting to make sure the requirements for your home to be covered are updated and secure.

We send this reminder to keep your home and family safe during storm season. We are here to help.

Do not let storm season send your home "flying."

The Leading Cause of House Fires

4/25/2019 (Permalink)

It is probably no surprise that the leading cause of house fires is cooking. Everyone has to cook food to live at some point, so here a few common mistakes to avoid so that you do not have a house fire.

1. Keep towels and potholders away from the stove. It is always good to make sure to keep them away at least two hours after cooking.

2. Avoid using oils and greases that can pop or crackle when they are hot. This can burn you or anyone else in a close distance in the kitchen.

3. NEVER leave a stove unattended. It may seem like everything is okay for the moment, but cooking can be unreliable and something can happen in a second.

Keep your family safe, and you can think of these tips next time you step up to the stove.

Smoking and Heating Systems Cause Fire Damage

4/25/2019 (Permalink)

There are a variety of things that can cause fire damage. Two of those are smoking and heating systems. Smoking in your home puts your home and safety at risk. The National Fire Protection Association reports that smoking in your home leads to more house fire deaths than any other cause for house fires. You can prevent this type of damage.

Help your local fire department out, and make sure if you are going to smoke, to keep it outside.

Another common cause of fire damage our heating systems. When the cold weather sets in we all grab out heaters out and put them whoever necessary to heat up our space. Heaters are great ways to warm areas at a low cost, but make sure you are being safe. Keep heaters away from any kind of hanging fabric, make sure not to leave a space heater on when you are not in the room, and ALWAYS make sure a heater is turned off.

Keep these tips in mind to keep fires from your home.

Water Damage in Your Home

4/25/2019 (Permalink)

One of the most common types of water damages we see are when customers are not at home and an unexpected event occurs that leaves their home in inches of water.

When you are leaving for a vacation, or even just a weekend trip, make sure there is someone who can watch your home. If they cannot be there, try to make sure to turn off all your water valves. These two tips can keep you from coming home to a house full of water.

Another way to keep water damages from your home is to seal any areas where flood waters can enter your home. We see flood damages in Kentucky on a regular basis. You may think your home is safe, but doing a double check of the areas around you home can keep you from paying thousands of dollars or making an insurance claim.

Water damage can happen to anyone, but keeping your home safe is possible with these tips.

Working Conditions-- How to Stay Safe During Winter Weather

2/5/2019 (Permalink)

There are many jobs that require you to be out in the elements during dangerous winter conditions (ours included, in some cases).

We want you to stay safe and comfortable this winter season. Check out a few tips on how to keep yourself in line when the temperatures drop:

1. Stay well rested before you know you are going to be doing any kind of outside labor.

2. Stay nourished by eating and drinking enough on the job.

3. Plan breaks from the cold so you can warm up throughout the day.

4. Make sure to stay dry! Use waterproof gear when you can to keep your outer shell warmer.

5. Dress for the conditions so you can adjust to changing temperatures through the day. Always use clothing that can be taken on or off quickly when you need to breathe and let other parts of your skin breath as well (such as ears, head, and hands).

We hope you keep these tips in mind the next time you work outside. There's always more to winter working than cleaning up after frozen pipes, so we want you to stay on the know when you are on the go!

Winter Weather Proof Your Home

1/22/2019 (Permalink)

We are already in the beginning stages of winter weather. Prestonsburg, Pikeville, Inez, and Hazard have been hit with major amounts of snow already. There's not a lot you can do to prevent the snow, but you can prepare your home to better handle these freezing temps.

Winter Weather Home Improvement Tips:

1. Have your chimney or flue inspected every year.

2. Install a smoke detector or carbon monoxide detector in your home. Check to see if they need fresh batteries every year.

3. Insulate walls and attic --and caulk and weather strip doors and windows.

These are just a few ways to winterize your home or business. SERVPRO® of Pike, Floyd, & Knott Counties wants to keep your family safe and warm for the winter season.

What To Do When Pipes Freeze (Water Damage Can Ensue)

1/22/2019 (Permalink)

Water damage can happen to anyone when frozen pipes season comes to visit.

When temperatures stay below freezing pipes can build up water and burst when the pipes begin to thaw.

Here are a few tips to keep your pipes from freezing:

1. Give pipes a helping hand: Open vanity and cabinets to let warmer room temperatures flow through them.

2. Keep water working: allow a small trickle to allow water to run continuously.

But, if your pipes do freeze:

1. Shut off water immediately. Don't try to thaw without turning off main shut-off valve for your water source.

2. Thaw pipes with warm air. You can melt the frozen water in the pipes with hair dyers and space heaters. But, do not leave space heaters unattended to do all the work --they can cause open flames.

3. Be careful turning water back on in your home. Once pipes are thawed slowly turn water on to keep water from causing any water damage to your home or business.

Burst Pipe in your home --what do you do now?

11/23/2018 (Permalink)

It's almost that time of the year again when burst pipes are happening more frequently.

It's always good to be prepared should this happen to you:

  1. Shut off the main water valve immediately- This step is critical, as it stops the flooding at its source. Make sure you know where your main water shut off valve is. Pro tip: try tagging the shut off valve so it is easy to spot. You can even call SERVPRO for an Emergency Readiness Plan for your business.
  2. Turn off the electric supply- This only applies if the main electrical is not wet. Never touch the electric if you are not sure, call an electrician instead. Do not turn on any TV’s or ceiling fixtures.
  3. Call a professional to begin mitigation right away- Time is key when it comes to water damage and restoring personal items. You can create a barrier between wet carpet and furniture with aluminum foil.
  4. Remove undamaged items from the affected area- To prevent further damage to removable items, take them out of the affected area and allow them to begin drying.

Preventing Attic Mold Damage in Your Home

6/20/2018 (Permalink)

Mold can appear in a variety of places in your home. One of the most frequent places we find mold is attics. Here are some tips and tricks for preventing mold growth in the top of your home:

  • Leaking Roof - Sometimes a roof leak is bad enough that water leaks into the floors below and becomes immediately apparent.  However often the leak is small enough to cause attic mold, without being apparent in the living spaces of the home.
  • Dryer Vents and other vents  -  This practice can pump warm, moist air into the attic where it can be trapped and begin the cycle of mold growth.  It is always best to vent these items outside of the home.
  • Missing or Improperly Installed Insulation -  Missing or improper installation of the wrong kind of insulation can cause problems in multiple ways.  Moisture from the lower levels of the home can rise and get trapped in the attic.

Three Types of Water Damage

5/11/2018 (Permalink)

Residents of Pikeville, Prestonsburg, Martin, and Hindman: water damage happens when we least expect it. Almost everyone has had some type of water damage from the smallest faucet leak to a bathtub overflowing to a washer hose mix-up. What you may not know; however, is there are three different categories of water damage.

Here are the differences in the categories of water:

Category 1: This water comes from a sanitary source and poses no real threat (examples: tub or sink overflow.)

Category 2: Refers to water that can contain chemical and biological contaminants that can cause sickness when consumed. Also, known as grey water (examples: toilet bowl water and sump pump failure.)

Category 3: This water has harmful agents such as bacteria and fungi. This type of water can cause extreme sickness and discomfort. Also, known as black water (examples: river, sewage, rising waters from floods, or standing water.)

SERVPRO is an IICRC Certified Firm, so we can determine what category of water is it, and how to best cleanup your water damage. Call SERVPRO® of Pike, Floyd, & Knott Counties to clean up your water damage and make it "Like it never even happened."

Mold Damage Cleanup: What NOT to do

5/11/2018 (Permalink)

Mold damage can happen at any time, but especially during these summer months. The weather is warming up and mold spores are coming out of hiding. Many people want to automatically turn to bleach to try and clean up the mold by themselves. It's always best to call a professional, so you don't spread the mold spores.

Here are a few reasons that bleach is not a good option for your next mold damage cleanup:

  1. Bleach is toxic.
  2. Bleach loses effectiveness overtime.
  3. Bleach does not kill mold on porous surfaces and can actually contribute to mold growth.

It's always best to let the professionals do the dirty work --call your local SERVPRO® of Pike, Floyd, & Knott Counties because we are here to help!

Swimming Safety with SERVPRO!

5/10/2018 (Permalink)

It's the best time of the year, because it's swimming season. The temperature outside has finally hit high enough for diving on into the water. The pool is a great place for families to relax and enjoy the summer, but it's always good to have helpful tips to keep safety a priority.

SERVPRO® of Pike, Floyd, & Knott Counties is here to help with tips on how to keep your family and friends safe while out at the pool or beach this summer:

  • Always watch over young children and the elderly while out at the pool, but especially on the beach.
  • Make sure to apply plenty of sunscreen, even on those cloudy days.
  • Keep life jackets available for those who don't have swimming experience.

Happy swimming!

Does Insurance Cover That?

5/9/2018 (Permalink)

As summer season approaches it's always a good idea to review your insurance. Insurance is great --it keeps you calm during your storm. But, your insurance may not cover as much as you think.

Your agents want to help you, try to keep in contact with them on what to do when disaster strikes. It's never a bad idea to review your contract and discuss the ins and out of what is covered. Another good idea, is to check your deductible. How much will you need to pay out of pocket before it reaches the level that your insurance can help you? Also, is there separate coverage and  deductibles for hurricanes, floods, etc.

It's always good to stay prepared, and we hope that disaster doesn't strike but SERVPRO is here to help 24/7 -365!

Remember the Pets during Storm

5/4/2018 (Permalink)

During a storm event, it's always smart to have a plan for your family --sometimes, it's hard to remember to have a plan for your pets too.

Ready.gov recommends a variety of ways to keep your pets safe during storm events.

Here are a few:

  • Create a buddy system in case you’re not home. Ask a trusted neighbor to check on your pets.
  • Identify shelters.
  • Find a local veterinarian or animal hospital where you may need to take an injured pet.
  • Have your pet microchipped with up to date information.
  • Call your local emergency management office, animal shelter or animal control office to get advice and information.

We want everyone to stay safe during storm events. So, next time a storm event is coming around the corner remember to keep the little paws, claws, and other pets safe!

Storms, storms, and more storms...

5/4/2018 (Permalink)

Storm season is upon us, and we are all too familiar with it. Last year, we did four separate storm events across the United States.

We were in Kansas City, Texas, Georgia, and most recently Louisville: all to take care of those communities who had been impacted by the storms.

Our large loss division allows us to leave home and help other communities in need. We have storm trailers specifically to make sure we have the equipment necessary to help those who are far away and without help.

We go into communities who have SERVPRO's who are too overworked to handle all of the damage themselves. We bring extra sets of hands, equipment, and heart to help these people.

As the saying goes, we're "Here to Help!"

Is it dirt or is it mold?

5/3/2018 (Permalink)

When you are a homeowner, we understand that the presence of mold can be scary. Mold can be unhealthy and hard to get rid of --if not treated properly and efficiently.

Here are some ways to detect if it's mold or dirt:

  • Mold grows in areas of high humidity.
  • Mold needs something to grow on in order to survive.
  • Mold has an appearance that looks more velvet up close.
  • Check to see if it has an odor. After a room has been closed up --come back to see if it has a smell.

Call our friends at Truth Consulting in Lexington to find out more on how to tell if your mold is in fact mold or dirt. If you do have mold --call your local SERVPRO® of Pike, Floyd, & Knott Counties for your mold cleanup.

5/1/2018 (Permalink)

According to our friends at FEMA, during the peak months of fall and winter they are even more likely to occur in your home.

Keep your home safe during the winter season and year around by keeping those dryer vents nice and clean!

8/29/2017 (Permalink)

One of the most common areas that flood in our homes are our basements. The water seeps in from different places and can ruin many beloved items. Typically, garages are near basements and can run into the same treatment. Water damage requires a professional to make sure you steer clear of possible mold damage. Here are some techniques you can use to make the process easier before we arrive:

  • Use wooden clothespins to hang up clothes, children’s stuffed animals, and photographs that may have been effected.
  • Make sure that furs and leather items dry separately and at room temperature.
  • Place aluminum foil or wood blocks between furniture and wet carpeting.
  • Remove upholstery and cushions for drying.
  • Remove any excess water by mopping or blotting until we arrive.

SERVPRO is ready for any size disaster. If your basement floods, call us at (606) 886-3826.

Having the right equipment during a fire can save your home –and your life!

6/16/2017 (Permalink)

P.A.S.S.- Use these tips to keep your family and home safe from fire and fire damages!

Fires and fire damage are common tragedies among homeowners. But, there are ways to lessen the damage. SERVPRO® of Pike, Floyd, & Knott Counties is Here to Help so fires don’t ruin your summer. One is having a proper fire extinguisher --especially, during grilling season. Make sure you follow these rules from our friends at the American Red Cross when it comes to having a good extinguisher:

  • Always have more than one working extinguisher in your home.
  • Install extinguishers high on the wall and away from any heat sources.
  • If an extinguisher doesn’t work on a fire immediately, drop it and get out. Most portable extinguishers empty in 8 seconds.
  • Make sure the gauge on your extinguisher is properly charged.

Once you have the right fire extinguisher, always remember PASS:

P- Pull the pin and hold the extinguisher with the nozzle pointing away from you.

A- Aim low. Point the extinguisher at the base of the fire.

S- Squeeze the lever slowly and evenly

S- Sweep the nozzle from side to side.

We hope these tips keep fires and fire damage from your homes. But, if you have fire damage and need SERVPRO, we are always Here to Help. Call SERVPRO® of Pike, Floyd, & Knott Counties at (606) 886-3826.

It’s not time to change the clocks back, but it is time to change your smoke alarms!

6/16/2017 (Permalink)

It's always that time of year to check your smoke alarms! Don't let a fire or fire damage keep you from your home!

Smoke alarms can improve the safety of your home a significant amount when it comes to fires. A fire can happen at any time, and you will want to make sure you and your family are safe. Here are a few tips from the American Red Cross on how to update your smoke alarms to keep your family and home safe before a fire ignites:

  • Have a smoke alarm on every level of your home and in every bedroom.
  • Keep smoke alarms away from windows, doors, walls, or ducts that can stop your alarms from working properly.
  • Check your smoke alarm monthly.
  • Replace smoke alarm batteries every year, or more if needed.

Keeping your family safe is the main priority to having a properly working smoke alarm; but fires can also cause hundreds, if not thousands, of dollars’ worth of damage every year. There is soot, smoke, and even water damage when it comes to a bad fire. The faster you know there is a fire, the faster you can get it put out. Visit: www.redcross.org to learn more tips on how to keep your home safe in case of a fire.

Whether it’s Mold remediation or Golf --SERVPRO is ready!

5/26/2017 (Permalink)

Marketing Rep Chanel Music getting ready for a day of fun in the sun with the SEK Golf.

Marketing Rep Chanel Music and Marketing Coordinator Kelsey White traveled up the mountain to the South-Eastern Kentucky Chamber of Commerce Golf Scramble last week to represent SERVPRO. They met with many city council members along with business owners throughout the day. The day was fun and hot, but they did have time to talk all things mold. The participants expressed their concern for mold damage in their area. Because they know, when water damage sits for too long, mold begins to take hold. The mold spores rapidly reproduce when moisture is present. For residents that can be dangerous, and for business owners, it can cause legal issues. Mold litigation is becoming a reoccurring case in the legal systems. Commercial property or personal property should be well-taken care of in case of water damage where mold can grow. One of the most common questions we receive is: Do we test for mold? The short answer is, no; however, we do refer industrial hygienists who can test for mold.

Here’s what to do if you find mold:

  • Stay out of affected area.
  • Turn off the HVAC system and fans.
  • Contact SERVPRO® of Pike, Floyd, & Knott Counties for remediation services.

What not to do if you find mold:

  • Don’t touch or disturb the mold.
  • Don’t blow air across any surfaces with visible or suspected mold growth.
  • Don’t attempt to dry the area yourself.
  • Don’t spray bleach or other disinfectants on mold.

Here in the bluegrass state we have weather patterns that can go all over the place. Business owners, homeowners, and city officials must be prepared. When the weather acts up, SERVPRO is ready to act fast!

Our agents and adjusters came from many different areas to join in on the learning fun! The classes offered included: Ethics, Bio-hazards, and Mitigation Awareness. The Ethics course covered a variety of subtopics like honesty and reliability. The Bio-hazards class was enjoyed by all; this class went in-depth on the different situations one may encounter dealing with commercial or residential property. The class got to view pictures and slides with information on the different bio-hazards SERVPRO can clean. The Mitigation Awareness course covered all the ways in which Mitigation strives to always be the true hero of the day! And, how SERVPRO restores, not replaces, household items and furniture that suffer water damage. We look forward to more CE Classes in the future!

We can make it “Like it never even happened.”

Crime scene cleanup can be a daunting task, which is why SERVPRO® of Pike, Floyd & Knott Counties has invested in the training, equipment, and products necessary to make any situation “Like it never even happened.” While you probably knew that our technicians need to be in full Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) just like our mold cleanup and remediation, histoplasmosis cleanup, category 3 water damage work, and guano cleanup, did you ever wonder what has to happen to the debris?

Crime scene cleanup specialists are required to dispose of biohazard waste with a certified incineration company. This portion often times represents a very large portion of the overall invoice. SERVPRO offers property owners no-cost tools for preparing a disaster readiness plan

Prestonburg, KY (Grassroots Newswire) <Date>—Each September, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) sponsors an awareness eventNational Preparedness Month (http://www.ready.gov/September)to encourage both home and business owners to review and update their emergency preparedness and business and life continuity plans. Julie Roberts, owner of SERVPRO® of Pike, Floyd, & Knott Counties, encourages Prestonsburg and Pikeville property owners to take advantage of the information available from FEMA, because advance planning is critical in dealing with and recovering from the unexpected.

“Most home and business owners have taken basic precautions to protect life and property in the event of an emergency like flooding, fire, wind damage, or even malicious attacks,” said Roberts. “In many cases, building codes require clearly marked emergency exits, fire extinguishers, fire and flood drills, and similar preparations. But the missing link for many property owners is a comprehensive emergency plan that provides first responders with the information they need to deal with the emergency quickly and effectively, like the location of shut-off valves, fire suppression system controls, and emergency contact numbers.”

SERVPRO offers tools for both commercial and residential property owners to help address this problem. Business and home owners alike can download the free SERVPRO READY app, and store time-critical contact and property information electronically, in advance, where it can be accessed with a mobile device in seconds if disaster strikes. In addition, when a business designates their local SERVPRO Franchise Professional as their disaster mitigation and restoration provider, SERVPRO professionals will conduct a no-cost assessment of the facility and assist the owner in completing a comprehensive Emergency READY Profile® (ERP). The ERP includes information about emergency contact numbers, priority and high/risk areas, shut-off valve locations and more that can then be stored in the READY app.

“The most effective response to any emergency is a fast response,” says Roberts, “and that means having critical information available and ready to access at a moment’s notice. FEMA statistics* show that as many as 40 percent of businesses never reopen after a major flood disaster. Minimizing downtime and repairs with a quick, effective response effort can help prevent this type of outcome for businesses and can also help families put their homes and lives back on track in less time and with less stress. Creating a READY profile in advance with SERVPRO’s no-cost tools is well worth the time.”

SERVPRO® of Pike, Floyd, & Knott Counties specializes in disaster restoration, cleanup and repair services, helping to remediate damage, making it “Like it never even happened,” for both commercial and residential customers. SERVPRO Franchises Take Away Top Honors at 2016 Convention in Las Vegas

8/11/2016 (Permalink)

Keep up our #ServproSummerOfSelfies social media campaign on a red carpet in Las Vegas.

The SERVPRO ownership team, consisting of Tony and Julie Roberts and Mike Parsons, returned from Las Vegas last month after a week of celebrating the accomplishments of their franchises at the 2016 SERVPRO National Convention.  Held at the MGM Grand, Tony, Julie, and Mike took the very hot week (up to 120 degree temperatures) to learn more about our new Operating Software enhancements, increasing customer service rankings, new advancements in water and fire damage cleaning and equipment, as well innovative sales tactics to keep our insurance clients and property managers thinking of the SERVPRO brand.

Ironically while visiting the typically hot and dry town, terrible rain storms flooded the streets, even causing the airport to delay flights.  “I received a flood warning notification on my phone” said Tony Roberts, “and naturally thought it was for Pikeville or Prestonsburg flooding, and it turned out it was for Las Vegas.”  Then while heading to the room, a leak in the ceiling of the casino caused a small water damage in the slot machine area.  “It’s like they knew SERVPRO was in town!”

The Roberts and Parsons celebrated another year of superior performance at the Awards Banquet.  Their franchises again ranked in the top 100 performers, of over 1600 franchises in the United States and Canada.  They also held on to their spot in the Top Storm Team Volume Producers of all time.  “We are extremely blessed with a great team, a passion for the industry, and the opportunity to help people when they need it most,” said Julie, “the fact that we are continually recognized as being the top performers in our system is just icing on the cake.”

SERVPRO Convention in 2017 is being held in Seattle, and Tony, Julie, and Mike said they plan on taking away top honors again next year.  “This year we’ve been afforded the opportunity to help a lot of people with fire, water and mold damage in Eastern Kentucky and beyond,” said Mike, “we just keep making it a priority to help those people who need it most, and our customers just keep coming back and spreading the word of our quality work.”

SERVPRO of Pike, Floyd, & Knott Counties Co-Owner, Julie Roberts, earned recognition for continuing education in Small Business Leadership last month, by completing the Southeast Kentucky Economic Development’s Core Four Business Planning Course.  The four week course, held in Williamsburg, Kentucky, focused on strategic planning for small businesses.  With classes in Marketing Plan Development, Cash Flow, Operations Management, and Funding, the course helps local business owners like Roberts not only start new businesses, but develop existing ones.  Roberts along with her husband, Tony, and business partner, Mike Parsons, have three SERVPRO locations in Prestonsburg, Berea, and London.

“After 10 years of doing business operations on a daily basis, sometimes you forget the small planning phases that are what built your business initially,” Roberts said.  “Core Four helped me take my business back apart, re-evaluate the foundation, and set up a solid plan for our future, both short and long term.”

SKED offers many classes for small business owners throughout Eastern and Central Kentucky.  “SKED has afforded us so many opportunities with business ownership I didn’t dream were possible,” said Roberts.  “I encourage anyone interested in getting into small business ownership, or even interested in further developing what you have, to attend one of these classes.”

Spring Cleaning – How clean is your home’s HVAC system?

    4/5/2016 (Permalink)

As a company specializing in cleaning services of all types and sizes, SERVPRO of Pike, Floyd, & Knott Counties finds that one of the most overlooked aspects of a clean home is the HVAC system and vents.  Have you ever thought to yourself…I wonder what is in my vents?  It’s a good question.  If you’ve never had your system cleaned before, then consider these benefits…

From the National Air Duct Cleaners Association:

Indoor Air Quality.  In a typical six room home, up to 40 pounds of dust is generated annually just through every day living!  That’s potentially 40 pounds of dust covering the inside of your system and being recirculated through your home every year.

Respiratory Issues and Allergies.  Think of all of the cleaning products, chemicals, dander, etc. present in your home each day.  Those particles are circulated on average 5-7 times per day.  These contaminants could build up in the duct work.  While this doesn’t necessarily mean your system is unhealthy, the buildup and recirculation of these contaminants could pose serious health problems to those with allergies or respiratory and/or autoimmune disorders.

Energy Savings.  According the U.S. Department of Energy, 25 to 40 percent of the energy used to cool or heat a home is wasted.  Contaminant build up inside the system over time causes the unit to work harder and can ultimately shorten the life of your system.  With a clean system, the unit doesn’t have to work as hard to maintain the desired temperature which leads to less energy being used and greater cost effectiveness.

If you haven’t had your HVAC system cleaned for some time – or ever – consider using the professional services of SERVPRO of Pike, Floyd, & Knott Counties.  Our experienced team can provide you with an affordable quote to have your entire system cleaned and fogged with an EPA registered disinfectant.  Having a clean system is a great way to promote healthy air quality in your home and lower energy costs each month.  Sounds like a great way to kick off your spring cleaning!

Are you “Weather Aware”? Tips for Being Prepared as Storm Season Approaches

    3/29/2016 (Permalink)

SERVPRO of Pike, Floyd, & Knott Counties has been involved in emergency storm assistance for many years now and during that time has actively worked with local insurance companies and emergency management teams to assist people in extremely difficult and dangerous situations.  With severe weather season fast approaching our area, it is important to be reminded of some basic safety tips in order to stay prepared and alert during our ever changing weather patterns.

From the Kentucky Division of Emergency Management:

    “When Thunder Roars, Go Indoors!”

    • Before a thunderstorm arrives, know the key warning signs:  dark clouds, lightening, and thunder

    • Get informed with a weather radio or by watching the news

    • Have an emergency kit on hand that includes flashlights, battery operated weather radio, first aid kit, food and water, and essential medicines

    • Stay inside and sheltered.  If outside, move indoors or into a vehicle.  Get out of water immediately.  If trapped outside, make yourself as small as possible in a low lying area

    • Make sure to wait at least 30 minutes after the storm has passed before going outside

In addition, in order to be prepared for a tornado:

    • Have a family tornado plan in place and practice a family tornado drill

    • Watch for weather signs like dark greenish skies, large hail, dark low clouds and load roaring sounds

    • Put as many walls and floors between you and the tornado as possible

    • Flying debris is the greatest danger during a tornado

    • If in a mobile home – GET OUT!  Find a neighbor, underground shelter, or permanent structure for safety

As a trusted leader in emergency response for our area, SERVPRO of Pike, Floyd, & Knott Counties is committed to helping our community be prepared for weather emergencies.  As a 24 hour emergency response partner, SERVPRO is dedicated to providing immediate and professional services to you and your family should the need arise during this severe weather season.

SERVPRO® Named to Entrepreneur’s Top 10 Franchise List

SERVPRO® Named to Entrepreneur’s Top 10 Franchise List

    for 7th Consecutive Year

Cleanup and restoration franchisor retains top ranking in restoration services category and climbs to #4 ranking overall in the 2016 Franchise 500 rankings

Prestonsburg, KY (Grassroots Newswire) 1/14/2016 - SERVPRO®, a cleanup and restoration franchise company, maintains its hold on the top ranking in the Restoration Services industry for the 13th consecutive year and moves up to the number four spot overall in the 2016 Franchise 500 rankings from Entrepreneur magazine.* This is the seventh consecutive year SERVPRO has been included in the magazine’s Top 10 list, standing out in a group of more than 951 franchises that qualified for inclusion in the list.

Entrepreneur magazine’s Franchise 500 selection process** uses "objective, quantifiable measures of a franchise operation" to help would-be entrepreneurs identify franchise investment opportunities. Some of the most important factors considered by Entrepreneur in developing the list each year are "financial strength and stability, growth rate and size of the system."

"It’s exciting to be part of a dynamic organization that continues to grow and strives to always provide superior support for its franchisees, and by extension its customers," said Julie Roberts, owner of SERVPRO of Pike, Floyd, & Knott Counties. "The recognition that the company earns year after year in this prestigious list is confirmation of a commitment to excellence that starts at the top and is evident in the service that each franchisee provides to each and every customer."

According to Roberts, a number of differentiators set SERVPRO apart from the competition and fuel the attractiveness of the company to both existing franchisees and would-be entrepreneurs looking for a strong business opportunity. Key among these are:

? SERVPRO’s strength as a brand with a national footprint, wide-spread market penetration, laser-focused brand messaging, and the ability to create national partnerships with organizations such as the PGA TOUR and the American Red Cross.

? SERVPRO’s commitment to being a learning organization, which keeps training and support at the forefront of the company’s culture and philosophy of success and helps franchisees plan, track, and deliver best-in-class services to consumers.

? SERVPRO’s focus on continued development and support for proprietary software and systems to allow the company’s operational capacity to keep pace with an aggressive growth strategy.

Sue Steen, SERVPRO Industries, Inc., chief executive officer, adds, "One of the potential pitfalls of growing too quickly is outpacing your capacity to train and support the franchisees. SERVPRO® is a conservative company, and early on we took the time to build a strong system and put the building blocks in place to support growth without sacrificing support to our franchisees."

"Today," Steen continues, "as a mature franchise organization with more than 1,700 locations under a single brand, recognition like this makes it clear we are reaping the rewards of having laid a solid foundation and a framework to handle quick growth. As our brand continues to grow, we will continue our winning strategy of supporting and improving upon our infrastructure and investing resources in training and support."

SERVPRO® specializes in fire and water cleanup and restoration services, helping both commercial and residential customers recover from property damage emergencies "Like it never even happened." For more information about SERVPRO®, please visit www.SERVPRO.com.

    Franchise Named CAPA Mentor

    12/3/2015 (Permalink)

SERVPRO of Pike, Floyd, & Knott Counties is honored to announce that we have been named one of 35 franchises recognized as a Commercial Accounts Program Mentor.  As the SERVPRO brand grows, our reputation has changed from a residential fire and water restoration company to a restoration company that is “Ready for Whatever Happens”.

Because of this success, both locally and nationally, the need for standardized systems to help develop and deliver consistency in the commercial marketplace for disaster recovery services exists.  It has been inspiring to be able to help develop these systems, the training, and help utilize innovative software, sales principles, and structured business practices needed to help establish a Commercial Accounts Program nationally.  It is even more rewarding to be able to help assist franchises through this mentorship program who are newer to commercial disaster recovery, and may need help.

We have committed to help any SERVPRO franchise who selects us as a Commercial Accounts Program Mentor with any assistance needed on a commercial loss, regardless of size.  From managing and producing these losses to scoping, sales, estimation, or resource management, our local team is “Ready for Whatever happens”.  Our team believes in the unilateral vision from our corporate office that these losses need to be structured and systematic, and consistent from coast to coast.

We are committed to using our knowledge, gained right here in Central and Eastern Kentucky, to help those who have clients in need.  We want to take the time to thank each of our clients, both residential and commercial alike, for all of the support given to us over the years.  Without you, our passion of serving those int heir time of need could not happen, and we are eternally grateful.

Home Fire Damage Peaks During Holiday Season

    11/23/2015 (Permalink)

As the holiday season approaches and families gear up for decorating their homes and hosting large gatherings of friends and family, Anthony Roberts of SERVPRO of Pike, Floyd & Knott Counties reminds homeowners to take note of some sobering statistics about home fire safety from the National Fire Prevention Association:

  • Cooking equipment is the leading cause of home structure fires. The three peak days for home cooking fires are Thanksgiving, Christmas Day and Christmas Eve.1
  • Candles fires peak in December. The top three days for candles fires are Christmas Day, Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve.2
  • “These statistics are a serious reminder of how the excitement of holiday entertaining can quickly turn into a life-altering fire or even a tragic injury or death,” says Roberts. “While glowing candles and elaborate meals set the stage for a great holiday get-together, homeowners need to exercise extra care in controlling the dangerous potential for fires.”

According to the NFPA3, unattended cooking is by far the leading cause of home cooking fires, with frying posing the greatest fire risk and electric ranges posing a higher risk than gas ranges. Range top cooking in general started the majority of home cooking fires and caused 86 percent of related civilian deaths for the reporting period.

While incidents of candle fires peaked in 2001 and have been falling since, candles are still one of the top 10 causes of U.S. home fires, according to the NFPA. As with cooking fires, unattended or abandoned candles account for a large portion of candle fires–almost 20 percent–but the most frequent cause of candle fires is placing the candle too close to something that can burn, like curtains, decorations or furniture.

“It’s easy to see why cooking and candle fires both peak during the holiday season,” says Roberts, “and it’s also easy to see why homeowners need to take extra care when decorating their homes or entertaining. A moment’s inattention at the stove or a guest repositioning a candle on a tabletop may be all it takes to turn the festivities into a fight to save property and lives. While our business is fire and water damage restoration and we stand ready to help at a moment’s notice if disaster does strike, our sincere hope is that our friends and neighbors will enjoy a fire-free and festive holiday season.”
